PHYSICS OF SPORTS PROJECT: THE GOAL
For this project, the Physical Education Department and the Science Department teamed up to create a project that would include both sports and physics. The assignment was to create video on the physics of an action of our choice from a sport. In this video we were supposed to explain, in detail, the concepts and proper stances behind sports.
THE PROCESS
We began the prosses by brainstroming differnt sports we could possibly examine for our video. Three came to mind. A baseball pitch, a volting flip, and running. We decided on running. Aren't we creative? After decideing on our sports action, we needed to come up with a list of differnt concepts needed to explain the action of running: momentum, center of gravity, acceleration, velocity, Newtons third law, and force.
To make it easeir to film we had to come up with a script and story board. This gave is a good base for our video. Considering that, as the cinimatographer it gave me nearly a sceen by sceen description of the shots and what not, which made it alot easier. After spending a short forty to fifty minutes on filming on a trail across the street from our school, we came back to the classroom and recorded our voice overs for around ten minutes. (All of this took place after school.) |
After all that was done and downloaded into my computer, I spent maybe three hours all together editing all the clips and audio into the video imbedded above. I believe that it is self explanitory that I uploaded it to youtube, but that was the final and last step. When it was all said and done, I calculated the approximate time spent on this entire project around five class days and three more hours at home all together. |
CONCEPTS
• MOMENTUM: The quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity. in terms of SI units, it is measured in kg m/s, which is equivilent to N s. You calculate this by multiplying mass and velocity.
• VELOCITY: The speed of something in a given direction. Velocity= distance/time.
-In the process of running involves velocity. When the runner is at the start, they have a velocity of zero. As they begin running there velocity gradually increases until they are at a constant speed and the runners velocity is at zero again.
• ACCELERATION: An increase in the rate or speed of something. It is very similar to velocity in the sense that velocity measures how quickly something is moving where. Acceleration is a measurement of how much velocity changes over time. The formula used for acceleration was: acceleration= change in velocity/time taken.
• FORCE: Any influence that causes an object to undergo a certain change, either concerning its movement, direction, or geometrical construction. You calculate force using the equation F=ma. Or Force equals mass times acceleration.
-The force of the runner we calculated to around 2000 newtons! The reason the force is so great is because the runners foot touches the ground, the force was greater. We calculated this with the equation mass times velocity is equal to force times time. Or mv=Ft.

• CENTER OF GRAVITY (OR MASS): a point from which the weight of a body or system may be considered to act. In uniform gravity it is the same as the center of mass. - A you see in the image to your right, the runners center of gravity is right around his belly button. Women tend to have a lower center of gravity due to thier wider hips while men have a higher center of gravity due to the broadness of their sholdier. |
Although we did not actually break this down in our video, we did indeed calculate the projectile motion of an actual runner. What this is is a aform of motion in which an object or particle (called a projectile) is thrown obliquely near the earth's surface, and it moves along a curved path under the action of gravity only. The path followed by a projectile motion is called its tradgectory. Projectile motion only occurs when there is one force applied at the beginning of the trajectory, after which there is no force in operation apart from gravity.

REFLECTION
If I compare the Rube Goldberg project and this one, I would have to say that this project went alot more smoothly than our previous procet. We honestly had almost no difficulties what so ever. The only minor problem we had was the fact that I left early on Friday and I couldn't upload the video until I had returned, and I don't know if that even counts as a problem, just more of a minor setback at worst.
I really enjoed working with my group. We all worked efficiently and everything went smoothly. For example the video shoot. I have been to many video shoots, adn I have to say that this one was the quickest one I've filmed for. We had a very managable schedual that helped us get everything done quickly.
Although for the most part our group worked brilliantly, we definatly had a few adjustmets we could make. One thing that I might want to work on a bit is perhaps learning how to edit with other people efficiently. However, editing with a group in a previous project, I have found that if you seperate editing between more than one person, the video begins to get a bit choppy. Of course my group had their input on the video; making sujestions on differnt parts, what they did and didn't like. This project could have easily been done by two people, maybe three. I guess the thing I would sujest for next time is maybe a group of three instead of four. It seemed to me that there was nothing for forth group members to do, besides record a voice over. However thats about it.
One thing that I noticed between a video shoot I had filmed for before and this one was that the cinematographer (me), and the writters (the group0 had comunication before the shoot. That made sure that everyone is on the same page with the styling of the video.
